Forex S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500 Index, calculated by Standard & Poor’s, represents the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States. It is one of the most important benchmarks for the U.S. stock market.

The S&P 500 is traded on international futures markets, and in the forex market, it is offered as a Contract for Difference (CFD), allowing investors to trade with high leverage.
Unlike the futures market, the SP500 CFD is traded as a spot instrument with no expiry date, meaning investors can take positions without worrying about contract rollovers.

Because it trades on a spot basis, overnight swap costs (carry costs) may apply. As one of the most actively traded indices in the world, the S&P 500 enables investors to take positions on both the rise and fall of the U.S. stock market.

Example of an S&P 500 Index Trade

Let’s consider an example: An investor wishes to open a 1-lot position on the S&P 500 index CFD with 1:10 leverage.

If the S&P 500 index price is 2,000, the investor’s total position size would be 2,000 × 100 = 200,000 USD, since the contract multiplier for the S&P 500 is 100.

With 1:10 leverage, the required margin would be 20,000 USD.

If the investor buys at 2,000 and closes the position at 2,010, the profit will be:
(2,010 − 2,000) × 100 = 1,000 USD.

However, since S&P 500 CFDs are spot instruments, there may be overnight financing costs (positive or negative) when holding positions open for multiple days.
